Things to do in Bad Wildbad, Germany
Bad Wildbad is an idylic town in Germany’s Black forest, situated in the state of Baden Württemberg. It is a beautiful spa resort which offers thermal baths, peace, nature walks through the black forest, adventurous sports and plenty of picturesque locations. The place offers something for people of all ages, and that is what makes it a perfect holiday destination.
Before I begin listing down the things to do/places to visit in this historically and culturally rich town, let’s take a look at the options to get there. There are two possible ways to reach the center of Bad Wildbad, if you are driving your personal car, there is no direct connection with the Autobahn, but you can easily drive from B294 into the Koenig-Karl-Strasse in Bad Wildbad. There are plenty of parking spaces in the 4 different parking plazas, spread around the city. The other option is to take S6 from Pforzheim Hauptbahnhof which directly takes one to the city center.
I have picked out a few interesting things one can do alone or with family during their trip to Bad Wildbad.
Bad Wildbad City Center
The Enz (tributary of Necker) flows along the city, with outdoor cafés lined one side of the water and hotels towers over the other side. The city center has a number of local shops for you to take a piece of Bad Wildbad with you home. A walk along the fast flowing river is just magical, moreover the bridges spread all along the city are an ideal place for a photoshoot.
Kurpark
Kurpark is the green oasis of the city, with centuries old trees towering over you, Enz flowing through the middle, varied paths, historic buildings, green patches and lakes. One might need a full day to explore the natural beauty this park has to offer. An ideal place for picnic, playing with kids or just relaxing.
Sommerberg Funicular Railway
Take the funicular railway from the city center to reach the top of Sommerberg. The train has been transporting people from Bad Wildbad to Sommerbeg for the past 100 years. It takes 3.5 minutes to reach its destination and the round trip ticket per adult costs 9€. Once at Sommerberg, you can enjoy ariel views of the city from the station, enjoy food on the terrace cafes overlooking the valley, or explore the wilderness of the Black Forest. Sommerberg has many attractions for tourist like the Baumwipfelpfad (Tree top path), Wildline hanging bridge, Adventure park, bike park and walking trials.
Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald
From the funicular railway station, take a walking trail to the Sommerberg Baumwipfeldpfad, which is a 1250m long tree top path. The path is an elevated wooden structure passing through the middle of the forest. The path is filled with activities for young and old alike, adorned with information boards about the flora and fauna in the black forest and small interactive balconies where one can climb, balance or take swings. This path leads to a 40m high elevation tower where you can enjoy 360 ° view of the Black Forest. Once you have taken in the spectacular view of the Black Forest, you can slide down using the 55m tunnel slide for some adrenaline rush.
The ticket for Baumwipfeldpfad costs 11 € per person, while the tunnel slide costs 2 € per person. The experience of walking deep into the forest is a life time experience.
Fußgängerhängebrücke Wildline
It is the only suspension bridge of its type in Europe which is built with its arch shaping upwards. A 380m long bridge at a height of 60m provides views of the forest and the Enz Valley. The bridge is ideal for photography and taking in all the nature one wants.
The ticket costs 9€ per person.
Adventure Park
At the foot of the Sommerberg Baumwipfeldpfad is the Adventure Park. It is a park spreading 8,000 m² in the middle of the forest and consists of 25 varied play equipment for people of all ages. It has swings, slides, play equipment, trampoline and lots of learning experiences for children. The adventure park is surely a heaven for the kids.
The ticket cost 7€ per person and there are also family and group tickets available.
Fairy Tale Trail
This 3.2km gravel trail starts from the Baumwipfeldpfad and goes deep into the forest. You can follow this trail and listen to the famous Black Forest Fairy tales along the way on the 9 different stations, where recordings of these tales are being played. Some stations also offer interesting interactive elements to provide information about the region to the visitors. The walk is about 1 hour long which is a fun way to learn about the region while getting some exercise done.
Overall, the Bad Wildbad region offers a fun filled holiday for people of all ages. I would recommend you not to miss out this region when travelling to Germany.
